Fertilizer soul-searching question: water first or fertilize first?

2025-06-18

In agricultural production, the order of fertilization directly affects the utilization efficiency of fertilizers and the healthy growth of crops. As an international fertilizer supplier, we analyze the key principles for you based on global practices:

1. The order varies according to fertilizer

Water-soluble fertilizers: Water first and then fertilize to avoid root burn. Fertilizing after the soil is moistened can help the fertilizer dissolve and distribute evenly, significantly reducing the damage to the root system caused by excessive fertilizer concentration, especially suitable for crops such as succulents that are sensitive to water.

Solid fertilizers: Fertilize first and then water. The watering process helps the fertilizer to effectively penetrate into the deep soil layer and improve nutrient utilization. This method is especially suitable for crops such as vegetables and fruit trees that require a large amount of fertilizer and have a well-developed root system.

Transplanting and planting: Watering → Planting seedlings → Add fertilizer and water after 7 days to prevent seedling burn.

2. Time and method: hidden key to efficiency

Time: Watering is best before 8 am or after 5 pm, when the temperature difference between water temperature, air temperature and soil temperature can be minimized. Fertilization should be done before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m., when the plant stomata are open and the nutrient absorption efficiency is the highest.

Method: Deep application is the core technology to improve fertilizer efficiency. For example, surface application of urea is prone to ammonia volatilization, which leads to nitrogen loss and reduces fertilizer utilization. Fertilization with a depth of 6-10 cm can increase its utilization rate from 27%-37% to 50%-58%.

3. Pit avoidance guide

Do not place fertilizer close to the root system to prevent seedling burning, and keep a safe distance.

Refuse to spread urea on the surface to prevent waste.

Use slow-release organic fertilizers with caution during the critical period of crop growth.

Fertilization should be combined with irrigation during drought; fertilization is prohibited before heavy rain to prevent loss.
